N igerian Uniccon Group has unveiled Africa’s First Humanoid Robot. The robot is packed with technology and sophisticated artificial intelligence, robotics and algorithms developed in-house. She speaks eight languages, including European (English, French), Middle Easter (Arabic) and African languages (Kiswahili, Pidgin, Wazobia, Afrikaans, and Igbo).

The female-like robot was developed by a subsidiary of the Uniccon Group. Although this Abuja-based subsidiary, called the StemFocus Robotics Lab, is only two-year-old, it has carved out a presence in the African technology industry.

Omeife services

Omeife has a dedicated service website at the address omeife.ai and also offers a downloadable app. Omeife offers translation capabilities, allowing users to convert text from one language to another with accuracy and speed. Besides languages the robot offers a portfolio of complementary services.

For example, Omeife AI app ‟Knowledge Assistant” acts as a knowledge assistant, providing information on a variety of topics like biology, business, marketing, finance, philosophy and so much more. The app generates subtitles for audios and videos and translates texts from one language to another, including local dialects and pidgin. It has the ability to generate maps in local languages, create and deploy models for image matching, voice and face recognition. These features also come with an integration into virtual reality using Uniccon VR.

Advanced features

In a statement to the media during the launch, the Group’s CEO Chuks Ekwueme said the humanoid provides language as a service. The targets are businesses that need to integrate native African audiences. According to the CEO, Omeife ‟identifies and tags humans through face and facial expressions”. Recognition is a key feature of Omeife. Ekweme explained that the robot pays ‟attention to a specific item when required. It identifies objects, knows their characteristics and also calculates positions and distances of objects it sees”.

The robot is mobile and has landscape mapping intelligence. It recognizes and navigates on non-flat surfaces and maintains balance thanks to its intelligent GPS for location and state-management. Ekwueme stated, ‟Omeife’s communication is enhanced by sophisticated gestures such as hand illustrations, smiles, grips, and other body movements”.
