Morocco and Ghana sign mutual bilateral free movement of people

O n March 23rd 2025, Ghana and Morocco agreed a mutual visa-free-waiver for travelers between the two countries. This move seeks to foster diplomatic and economic ties. This initiative aims to strengthen economic ties and promote free movement within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Ghanaians and Moroccans will visit each other without a visa for a period of up to 90 days. Students form the dominant group within the Ghanaian population in Morocco, followed by business visitors. Conversely, Morocco has an established business community in Ghana.

Diplomatic relations and cooperation

Ghana and Algeria established diplomatic relations in 1962, when Algeria gained independence. The two countries cooperate at the bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels. This travel agreement covers projects related to socio-economic issues. Specifically, in education, Algeria has committed to increasing scholarships for Ghanaian students in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and engineering. Also, Ghana plans to establish direct flights between Accra and Algiers. In parallel, the two countries have agreed trade partnerships in oil and gas. The fourth item in this cooperation agenda is in the security field. Algeria and Ghana want to enhance intelligence sharing to address mutual concerns spreading regional stability.

Economic and trade relations

In January 2023, Algeria and Ghana established a double taxation treaty. The goal of this treaty is to fighting tax evasion, while preventing double taxation tradable goods between both countries. The treaty offers clarity on tax implications for businesses. Major Moroccan companies operating in Ghana include Algeria’s.

In November 2024, the official Ghana News Agency (GNA) disclosed that trade between Ghana and Morocco reached US$44 million 1. In 2023, Ghana exported US$7.12 million to Algeria. The major products that Ghana exported to Algeria were mollusks (US$1.66 million), Bran (US$1.57 million), and cocoa powder (US$786 thousand). Over the past five years, exports from Ghana to Algeria have decreased from US$8.28 million in 2018 to US$7.12 million in 2023 (2.97 percent).

Export from Algeria to Ghana increased 3.14 percent during the same period. In 2023, Algeria exported US$135 million to Ghana. The main products that Algeria exported to Ghana were refined petroleum (US$52.4 million), non-fillet frozen fish (US$28.1 million), and processed fish (US$14.1 million). Over the past five years, exports from Algeria to Ghana have increased from US$116 million in 2018 to US$135 million in 2023 2.
