The Ghana Stock Exchange has a bias towards the banking and financial services sector. Fifty percent of companies listed on the GSE are financial stocks; even though this sector only contributed 6.9 percent of the country's GDP in 2024. The influence of banking and financial services is so strong that the GSE created a special index for this economic sector, which it called the GSE Financial Stock Index (GSE-FSI). All ordinary shares of the financial stocks are included in the GSE-FSI at total market capitalization. But MTN which provides financial services via mobile money is not part of this index.
